Robert George Barlen (born July 27, 1980), best known as Bob Barlen, is a Canadian screenwriter. He is best known for having co-written The Weinstein Company's animated film Escape from Planet Earth (2013) and producing / co-writing "The Nut Job 2" (2017).

Career

Upon graduating from Ryerson University, Barlen attended the Directors' Lab at the Canadian Film Centre.[1]

He co-wrote the screenplay for Escape from Planet Earth [2] released to theaters February 15, 2013. The cast of Escape includes Ricky Gervais, Rob Corddry, Brendan Fraser, Sarah Jessica Parker, Jessica Alba, William Shatner, Craig Robinson, George Lopez, Jane Lynch, Sofía Vergara, Jonathan Morgan Heit and Steve Zahn.

Escape was the #1 film at the North American box office on President's Day, February 18, 2013.[3]

As of April 23, 2013 Escape From Planet Earth has grossed $54,867,461 at the domestic box office[4] and is now the highest-grossing animated film ever released by The Weinstein Company.[5]

Barlen is producing and co-writing "The Nut Job 2" starring Will Arnett, Maya Rudolph and Katherine Heigl which is being released domestically by Open Road Films on May 19, 2017. [6]
