The cover of the first volume of Genshiken, as released by Del Rey Manga.

This is a list of volumes and chapters of the manga series Genshiken, along with the approximate time period each chapter takes place. The series is published in Japan by Kodansha and in English by Del Rey Manga.[1] The series was serialized from June 2002 to June 2006 in Afternoon magazine, and reprinted in nine collected volumes released between December 2002 and December 2006. The English version, translated by David Ury, was released between April 2005 and November 2007.

The collected volumes generally have six chapters each. Additionally, each volume contains between-chapter interludes with regards to an otaku-specific topic. This can range from the characters discussing the best moments in the Kujibiki Unbalance anime (a show within a show for the series) in volume four, Tanaka's construction of a figure from scratch in volume six, or reviewing character designs for the newer Kujibiki Unbalance adaptation in volume eight. Although these side-bits do not often pertain directly to the plot of the volume, they provide additional commentary on particular elements of fandom as well as the characters themselves, while further establishing a sense of reality for the world the characters inhabit.

Genshiken follows the everyday lives of a college club for otaku, Shiiou University's "Society for the Study of Modern Visual Culture" (現代視覚文化研究会, Gendai Shikaku Bunka Kenkyūkai), or just "Genshiken" for short. The story begins in Spring 2002 with the character Kanji Sasahara's discovery of the club as a freshman, and progresses until his graduation in March 2006. This timeframe is roughly contemporaneous with the comic's original serialization in Afternoon magazine, from June 2002 to June 2006. Story dates are established periodically by background evidence in the manga, such as calendars, as well as through yearly events such as school events, graduations, and the Summer and Winter "Comic Festival" (Comifes), which mirrors the real-life Comic Market. Other evidence can be found in the simple progression through college by the characters. The anime adaptation, however, is considerably more vague about when the series takes place, allowing it to reference franchises and tropes that did not exist at the time of the manga's original publication.

On the last day of the spring semester, Yotsuba and Koiwai move into their new house and meet the neighbors, the Ayase family. Although they encounter problems, including a broken bathroom lock, Yotsuba's need to learn about polite greetings, air conditioners, and the proper uses of doorbells, they manage to settle in comfortably. Fuka offers the Koiwai family their old television, and when Jumbo helps carry it, the Ayases are impressed by his height. For other household goods, Koiwai takes Yotsuba shopping at a department store for the first time. The following day, Jumbo takes Yotsuba and Ena cicada-catching and after Fuka helps bring in the laundry, Yotsuba plays in the rain.

To give Miura a "summer vacation memory," Jumbo takes her, Yotsuba, and Ena fishing. Koiwai and Yotsuba go shopping for dinner, but he forgets his wallet and they must borrow money from Fuka. When Fuka sees the boy she likes with another girl, Yotsuba tries to understand, then console, her broken heart. After Ena takes Yotsuba to radio exercises for the first time, she invites Yotsuba over for breakfast, where Yotsuba decides to become a newspaperman. Her career ends, however, when The Yotsuba Times publishes the secret of Fuka's heartbreak to the rest of the family. After dreaming of being a tsukutsukubōshi, Yotsuba dresses up as one, only to learn that they are not summer-ending fairies but a type of cicada.

Ena and Miura make a robot costume out of cardboard boxes, which Yotsuba assumes is a real robot. Yotsuba helps Mrs. Ayase with household chores and then meets Koiwai's kōhai, Yanda, whom she instantly dislikes. To help with Ena's homework, Jumbo takes her, Miura, Yotsuba, and Fuka stargazing. During rainy day errands, Yotsuba misinterprets Koiwai's excuse for not going to the ocean, "There'll be jellyfish!" as a promise to go see jellyfish, and invites Ena and Fuka along. When she throws a tantrum, he gives in and the four spend the afternoon at the beach.

Ena and Miura show Yotsuba how to make a paper-cup telephone, and then take her on a bike ride to the elementary school playground. Because of Yotsuba's continuing interest in milk, Koiwai plans a trip to a farm, but this is put off when she gets a fever. Yotsuba helps Fuka and a classmate bake a cake for their school cultural festival. When Koiwai wants instant ramen for lunch, Yotsuba insists on running the errand by herself for the first time. Koiwai, Jumbo, and Yanda take Yotsuba on her long-delayed farm visit, where she meets sheep and learns how to milk a cow.
