Kujibiki imbalance (2004-2007)
Rāmen Tenshi Pretty Menma (2007)

Genshiken ( Japanese げ ん し け ん ) is a manga by Kio Shimoku that has been published since 2002 and has been filmed as an anime several times . He describes both life as an otaku and their lifestyle. The series has also spawned two spin-offs : Kujibiki Unbalance , which was also produced as a manga and anime, and Rāmen Tenshi Pretty Menma , which was released as a manga.

content

The series is about the college club "Genshiken", a club for otakus, and the life of its members. Genshiken is an abbreviation for company for the exploration of modern visual culture ( 覚文化究会 , gene dai Shi kaku Bunka Ken kyūkai ). Members of the club are initially Kanji Sasahara, Makoto Kōsaka, Harunobu Madarame, Sōichirō Tanaka, Mitsunori Kugayama, Kanako Ōno and the silent, discreet president, who has been with the club since the club was founded in 1987. Saki Kasukabe, Makoto's friend, is often in the club because of her boyfriend, but does not share his preference for mangas, anime and games and wants to dissuade him. The members of Genshiken spend everyday life as otakus with video games and animes, travel to conventions together, have to deal with newcomers and are threatened with the closure of their club.

Characters

  • Kanji Sasahara : Student Kanji Sasahara is an anime and manga fan and, at the beginning of the series, manages to join the Genshiken college club, a club for otakus . Over time, he overcomes his feelings of shame for his passion, becomes an enthusiastic club member and later also the third president of the club. He has a little sister named Keiko Sasahara.
  • Makoto Kōsaka : Makoto Kōsaka is also a new addition to the Genshiken, a Bishōnen and an outstanding gamer. He is Saki Kasukabe's friend.
  • Saki Kasukabe : Saki Kasukabe is Makoto's girlfriend, but he can neither share nor approve of his love for mangas, anime and games. She is blackmailed by the first president into joining the club and twice saves it from closing. Over time, she gets along better and better with others and their otaku lifestyle, but without becoming an otaku herself.
  • Harunobu Madarame : Harunobu Madarame is a case of hardship even for otaku standards who spends practically all of his money on dōjinshi . As a result, he has little money for food or other everyday things. He is the second president of Genshiken after the first president resigned from office.
  • Sōichirō Tanaka : Sōichirō Tanaka is an avid cosplayer . Until Kanako Ōno steps in, he is the only cosplayer in the club and makes the costumes for her. Due to their common interests, Tanaka and Ōno have a close bond and later become a couple. Another hobby of Tanaka is assembling plastic models of combat robots.
  • Mitsunori Kugayama : Mitsunori Kugayama is a stuttering, somewhat overweight, rather reserved contemporary and until the appearance of Chika Ogiue the only one at Genshiken who can draw well, but he lacks motivation.
  • Kanako Ōno : Kanako Ōno is the first female member to voluntarily join the club. She shares a passion for cosplay with Tanaka and is a Yaoi fan. Before coming to Japan, she lived in the United States. She is the first woman president to take over the post of third president Kanji Sasahara.
  • Chika Ogiue : Chika Ogiue is a self-proclaimed otaku hater and especially hates female otakus, but is actually an otaku herself and is ashamed of it at first. Like Kugayama, she is an amateur draftsman and in her spare time she draws erotic dōjinshi of Kanji Sasahara and Harunobu Madarame. She is also a Yaoi fan like Ōno. Ogiue is the fifth president of Genshiken.
  • Manabu Kuchiki : Manabu Kuchiki is a loud and annoying member of Genshiken. He comes only a year after Sasahara. Before joining Genshiken, he was a member of another anime club. He is the second best gamer in the club after Kōsaka.

Publications

The first manga was published by Del Rey Manga in the US, Canada and the UK, Star Comics in Italy and Editions Kurokawa in France . The first manga was published in German by Heyne Verlag .

Anime

The anime based on the manga was produced under the direction of Takashi Ikehata at Palm Studio . Hirotaka Kinoshita was responsible for character design and Shin Okui was the artistic director. The manga was implemented true to the original; the first five volumes of the manga were adapted with the first 15 episodes. The production initially focused on Sasahara, later the focus was extended to the other members of the Genshiken and their lives. Care was taken to maintain the atmosphere of the manga series. The series was broadcast from October 10 to December 26, 2004 in twelve episodes on the Japanese television station Kids Station. By Media Factory was originally announced that a second season would be released in October of 2006. In May 2006, however, Media Factory announced that instead of a second season, the anime Kujibiki Unbalance will be released as a spin-off. So in December 2006 a three-part original video animation for Genshiken followed , which shows episodes 13, 14 and 15, as well as the offshoot Kujibiki Unbalance . On April 23, 2007, Genshiken's website confirmed a second season. From October 10 to December 26, 2007 it was finally broadcast on Japanese television under the title Genshiken 2 by Chiba TV , TV Aichi and TV Saitama .

The series and the OVA have been translated into English and Chinese. There are also French, Spanish, Polish and Swedish translations of the series. In Germany, the anime was released in 2005 on five DVDs including the first Kujibiki Unbalance anime by Anime Virtual .

Spin-offs

Kujibiki imbalance

Kujibiki Unbalance, which is Genshiken's favorite show and is a typical romantic comedy, has now also been implemented as a manga and anime series. Genshiken's first release featured three OVA episodes in the series. In 2006, a twelve-part series of Kujibiki Unbalance was broadcast on the same TV channel as Genshiken and released on DVD. The series also featured an OVA episode of Genshiken on each DVD release. From September 2006 to December 2008, a manga by Keito Koume was published in Afternoon magazine.

Rāmen Tenshi Pretty Menma

Another fictional series that was invented for Genshiken is Rāmen Tenshi Pretty Menma ( ラ ー メ ン 天使 プ リ テ ィ メ ン マ )), an eroge . While the game was only briefly mentioned in the first season, it moved more into focus during the second season. The game revolves around Kaoru Torigara , the only son of a Rāmen shop owner who wants to renovate the shop he has just inherited. He discovers that the shop has a guardian angel ( tenshi ) named Pretty Menma . She explains to him that she should help him win a competition that is held between the restaurants every four years. Similar to Kujibiki Unbalance, the series was produced as a manga in 2007, which was drawn by Noria Shiroi and published in the manga magazine Monthly Comic Alive . An anthology ( ISBN 978-4-8401-1992-4 ) was published on January 23, 2008. There was also a separate web radio show for the series.

reception

The magazine AnimaniA writes about the manga: "The humanity and refreshing open-heartedness of the Genshiken friends [...] make up the charm of the unrestrained story, which despite the erotic allusions seldom slips into obscenity." The series is "extremely detailed and in one ." angular, loose style drawn. "

According to AnimaniA, the animation anime series has an average TV standard, but sometimes with “loving and detailed backgrounds” . The soft matte design of the eyes creates an appealing atmosphere and the realistic, unobtrusive character of the series. Some scenes were reminiscent of colored manga panels with a “dashed design and rather pale colors” . The German synchronization was successful, but the soundtrack was not noticeable and “ripples more in the background” . The plot offers "funny otaku entertainment that enchants with a very unobtrusive humor and wonderful characters" and a "realistic insight into Japanese otaku life" . The series is similar to Cosplay Complex and Otaku no Video .
