(3463) Kaokuen is an asteroid of the main belt , which on December 3, 1981 from Purple Mountain Observatory in Nanjing was discovered.

The asteroid was named on May 3, 1996 after Charles Kuen Kao , who later won the Nobel Prize in Physics , and a pioneer in the field of fiber optics and telecommunications.
