Álvaro Pierri (born January 18, 1953 in Montevideo , Uruguay ) is a Uruguayan classical guitarist .

He comes from a family of musicians. His grandfather was the composer José Pierri Sapere (1886–1957). Álvaro Pierri received his first music lessons on the piano and the guitar from his mother and aunt when he was five. Since the age of eleven, he has won several international prizes, including the 18th Concours International from Radio France Paris in 1976.

In addition to his solo career, he is also a particularly committed chamber musician and has performed with Frank Peter Zimmermann, Astor Piazzolla , the Cherubini Quartet and others.

His playing is characterized by an almost indefatigable spectrum of timbres, intelligent and well thought-out phrasing as well as impulsive, agogic-wandering, particularly expressive elements, which stems from his diverse and calm character.

Currently (2007) Pierri teaches at the University of Music and Performing Arts Vienna and in Montréal at the Conservatory, where he holds a professorship.

His discography now includes more than a dozen CDs, including both solo and chamber music literature. a. also recordings with renowned orchestras (e.g. Concierto de Aranjuez).

He can be heard regularly at important concerts and festivals around the world (e.g. the Guitar Forum Vienna ).
