Ángel de Villalobos (born November 15, 1808 in Vinaròs , † March 26, 1880 in Madrid ) was a Catalan- Spanish journalist, politician, industrial promoter, Romance philologist and Hispanist , who temporarily worked as a university teacher in England.

life and work

Villalobos y Febrer grew up as an emigrant in France until 1820. From 1820 to 1827 he lived in London. Then he went to Spain and taught at the Pedagogical College at the University of Alcalá . In 1834 the Spanish government sent him to London to inspect the primary school system there. He returned but was forced to move to London again due to a change of government.

In London he worked for José María Jiménez de Alcalá in the publication of the magazine El Instructor ó Repertorio de Historia, Bellas Letras y Artes (1834–1841), which he continued after his departure in 1840 and converted into the magazine La Colmena. Periódico trimestre de ciencias, artes, historia y literatura , London (1842–1845).

Villalobos was from October 16, 1840 to November 1847 (after Pablo de Mendíbil and José María Jiménez de Alcalá) the third holder of the chair of Spanish at King's College London .

In 1847 Villalobos went to Barcelona (unofficially earlier, as there was a lack of students in London). In 1848 he became the founding director of the Institut Industrial de Catalunya and promoter of the Spanish Railways. From 1850 he was a member of parliament in Madrid, first from Manresa , from 1865 from Xàtiva .

Villalobos published the newspaper El Bien Público (as an organ of the Catalan Industrial Institute) from 1849 and the newspaper La Razón Española from 1863 .

In his capacity as a sponsor of railway projects, Villalobos appeared several times on postage stamps celebrating railway anniversaries, for example in 1948 for the centenary of the first railway on the Iberian Peninsula (between Barcelona and Mataró ).
