The Aesculapian Ragwurz ( Ophrys aesculapii ) is a species of the genus Ragwurzen ( Ophrys ) and thus the orchid family . Synonyms are: Ophrys sphegodes subsp. aesculapii (Renz) Soó ex JJWood and Ophrys renzii Soó . It blooms from March to May.

features

This herbaceous perennial plant reaches heights of between 15 and 40 cm. The stem has five to seven leaves at its base and one or two more leaves above .

The inflorescence is loose and includes three to ten flowers . The bracts are longer than the ovary . The sepals appear yellowish-green and the lateral ones are sometimes also spotted brownish-red in the lower half. The bald, corrugated petals are also yellow-green to yellow in color. In contrast, the velvety lip appears dark brown to reddish brown with a broad, light to orange-yellow and bare edge.

Location and distribution

You can find this orchid in sparse pine forests , garrigues and on poor grasslands with base-rich and moderately dry soils up to a height of 1000  m . This plant species is endemic to southern Greece .
