history

The ship was built on behalf of the Royal Danish Navy as the first all-steel gunboat in England by William Fairbairn & Co. in Millwall in south-east London . After completion, the paddle steamer was transferred to Denmark by Captain Hans Carl Bodenhoff and reached Copenhagen on October 12, 1841 . Between the years 1842 to 1856 it was also the royal yacht and was used by the then royal family for trips.

The Ægir was on loan to the Danish Post from 1857 to 1862 and was in service as a mail ship . In the 1860s the Ægir was used to survey Danish waters and from 1864 until the end of 1871 it was used again as a gunboat in the navy.

On December 5, 1871, the paddle steamer was sold to the scrap recycling company Petersen & Albeck in the southern harbor of Copenhagen, removed from the shipping register and scrapped in 1872.
