Edouard Dhorme
Édouard Paul Dhorme (born January 15, 1881 in Armentières ( Nord-Pas-de-Calais ), † January 19, 1966 in Roquebrune-Cap-Martin ) was a French Assyriologist , Semitist and Bible translator .
He entered the Dominican order at a young age ( religious name Paul) and received his training at the École biblique in Jerusalem , where he taught as a professor since 1904 and was its director since 1927. From 1932 he taught at the École pratique des hautes études , and from 1945 he was professor of Assyriology at the Collège de France . In 1951 he retired.
One of his main works deals with the religions of Babylonia and Assyria . The French translation of the Old Testament was published under his direction in the prestigious Bibliothèque de la Pléiade series by Gallimard .
Since 1948 he was a regular member of the Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres .
