Élisabeth Giacobino (born April 3, 1946 in Paris ) is a French physicist .

Career

Elisabeth Giacobino studied from 1965 to 1969 at the École normal supérieure de jeunes filles and the natural science faculty of the University of Paris . After her maîtrise in physics, she completed her studies in 1969 with a thesis on the subject of optical pumping of the 2p level of neon by a laser beam . This work had been carried out at the Institute of Physics at the École normal supérieure . In 1976 she did her doctorate with a study of the excited states of the neon atom using Doppler-free spectroscopy at the CNRS . In 1984 she was appointed directrice de recherche de 2e classe , and in 1995 directrice de recherches de 1re classe , which corresponds roughly to a C3 or C4 professorship in Germany.

From 1995 to 1999 she was Deputy Scientific Director of the Department of Physical and Mathematical Sciences at the CNRS, and from 1999 to 2001 Director of the Laboratoire Kastler Brossel in Paris. From 2001 to 2002 she was director of the Department of Physical and Mathematical Sciences at the CNRS. From 2002 to 2005 she was Director of Research at the French Ministry of Science. In 2006 she was elected President of the Institut d'Optique Graduate School and appointed Interdisciplinary Officer of the CNRS.

On July 15, 2009 Elisabeth Giacobino was registered under matriculation no. In 7280 admitted to the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina .

In her scientific work, Giacobino deals with laser physics , nonlinear optics , quantum optics and superfluidity .
