Laboratoire Chancellor Brossel

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Laboratoire Kastler Brossel (LKB) is a research institute for basic research in the field of quantum physics in Paris. It was founded in 1951 by Alfred Kastler and Jean Brossel and is operated jointly by the Center national de la recherche scientifique (CNRS), the École normal supérieure , the University of Pierre and Marie Curie or Sorbonne Université and the Collège de France . Currently, 12 different working groups are researching at the Laboratoire Kastler Brossel, which are active in the four subject areas of quantum gases, quantum optics and quantum information, atoms and light in dense or complex media, as well as tests of fundamental interactions and metrology.

history

The Laboratoire Kastler Brossel was founded in 1951 by Alfred Kastler and Jean Brossel . From the beginning, the work at the LKB was dedicated to the interaction of light and matter. Accordingly, the institute was called "Laboratoire de spectroscopie hertzienne de l'École normal supérieure" in the early years and was initially part of the physics department of the Ecole normal supérieure . In 1966 the LKB was included in the CNRS and in 1967 a second location was opened on the campus of the University of Paris VII .

In 1994 the name was changed to "Laboratoire Kastler Brossel" in honor of the two founders Alfred Kastler and Jean Brossel and their pioneering work on optical pumping .

The institute, which today is one of the most important research institutions active in the field of quantum physics worldwide, is now jointly operated by CNRS , École normal supérieure , Sorbonne Université and Collège de France .
