Alain Aspect
Alain Aspect (born June 15, 1947 in Agen ) is a French physicist whose main field of work is quantum optics .
Life
Around 1980 Aspect worked with Jean Dalibard and Gérard Roger on an experimental test of the EPR effect . In an experiment in 1982 they were able to prove that Bell's inequalities are violated when measuring entangled photons . The test results falsify Einstein's conception of local hidden parameters .
The result of the experiment essentially leaves two interpretations of quantum mechanics: Either (a) experimentally inconceivable long-range effects are at work (Einstein spoke in this context of spooky long-range effects ) or (b) the quantum mechanical description of the experimental processes uses a formalism, whose objects cannot simply be viewed as direct components of reality. This last view is the view of the Copenhagen interpretation of quantum mechanics by Niels Bohr and Werner Heisenberg . Einstein's statement about the eerie action at a distance was actually directed against this interpretation .
Aspect works at the Charles Fabry research laboratory at the Institut d'Optique in Orsay , which is run jointly by the CNRS and the University of Paris-South . At the same time he is a professor at the École polytechnique . Currently (as of 2010) he is working on Bose-Einstein condensates . He is a member of the Académie des Sciences in France.
