Bertrand Israel Halperin (born December 6, 1941 in Brooklyn ) is an American physicist .

life and work

Bertrand Halperin was born as the son of Morris and Eva Halperin, b. Teplitsky born. In 1961 he earned his bachelor's degree from Harvard University and moved to the University of California, Berkeley , where he made his master's degree in 1963 . He was a visiting scholar at Princeton University from 1964 to 1965 . In 1965 he received his doctorate (supervisor: John Hopfield ). He then worked as a postdoctoral fellow at the École normal supérieure in Paris to conduct research at Bell Laboratories from 1966 to 1976 . Since 1976 he has been a professor at Harvard University, and since 1992 Hollis Professor of Mathematics and Natural Philosophy. From 1988 to 1991 he was Dean of the Faculty of Physics. Since 1994, he has been Scientific Director of the Center for Imaging and Mesoscale Systems (CIMS) for ten years.

Halperin works in the field of condensed matter and statistical physics . He is interested in two-dimensional electron systems at low temperatures and strong magnetic fields, so-called quantum Hall systems (→ quantum Hall effect ). In 1993, together with Patrick A. Lee and N. Reid , he predicted the existence of a metallic state in half-filled Landau levels , which was soon afterwards demonstrated , whereby the electrons in the two-dimensional systems form compound quasiparticles with vortices. In 1978 he investigated two-dimensional melting processes with David R. Nelson (see hexatic phase ) and was able to make predictions that were later made by Pindak et al. have been confirmed experimentally. Further research interests include: superconductivity , transport processes in inhomogeneous systems and nuclear magnetic resonance in porous media. He used to work on quantum antiferromagnets in one and two dimensions, properties of glasses at low temperatures and dynamic phenomena near a phase transition.

Halperin has been married to Helena Stacy French since September 23, 1962 and has a son, Jeffery Arnold, and a daughter, Julia Stacy.
