from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Marie-Anne Bouchiat (* 19th July 1934 in Nantes as Anne Guiochon ) is a French physicist.

Bouchiat studied from 1953 to 1957 at the École normal supérieure de jeunes filles and in 1957 passed her teaching degree in physics. 1957 to 1959 she was at the Palmer Physics Laboratory at Princeton University . She received her doctorate in 1964 . From 1972 to 2005 she was a scientist (Directeur de Recherche, after 2005 honorary) of the CNRS at the École Normale Supérieure, Laboratorium Kastler-Brossel.

In 1974 she and her husband Claude Bouchiat proposed a test for parity violation by the electroweak interaction in atomic physics. In 1982 she experimentally demonstrated the parity violation in cesium ( Steven Chu and others also found the effect in thallium in 1979 ).

Before that, she worked, for example, on the optical examination of liquid surfaces. and the relaxation of optically excited alkali atoms through interaction with noble gases or the atoms of the surrounding walls with application to atomic clocks .

Bouchiat has been a corresponding member of the French Academy of Sciences since 1986 and a full member since 1988 . She is a member of the Academia Europaea . In 1968 she received the Prix Hugues and in 1983 with Claude Bouchiat the Prix Ampère of the Académie des Sciences . She is a knight of the Palmes Académiques and the Legion of Honor . In 1966 she received the bronze medal and in 1971 the silver medal of the CNRS.

Her daughter Hélène Bouchiat is also a well-known physicist.
