biography
After attending the Lycées Henri IV and Louis-le-Grand , he studied law and received a doctorate. After graduating, he began teaching constitutional law and later, from 1867 to 1870, lectured on the history and culture of civilizations in comparison to their architecture at the École Spéciale d'Architecture .
Concerned by the general ignorance and disinterest in political issues during the Paris Commune , he founded the École libre des sciences politiques in 1872 with the help of groups of academics and industrialists. From 1873 to 1890 he instituted the constitutional history classes for England , France and the United States . Until his death he remained the director of the institution he founded.
In 1879 he was elected a member of the Académie des sciences morales et politiques .
In a debate at the end of 1890, he defended the independence of political science, which he regarded as experimental and inductive, while other academics emphasized its proximity to constitutional law.
