Émile Taigny (born January 25, 1810 in Paris , † May 17, 1875 ibid) was a French actor, theater director and theater manager.

biography

Taigny's father was from Normandy and settled in Paris. He left his children free to choose a profession and so Émile Taigny decided, as the youngest of four brothers, to become an actor. He began his career at the age of 14 at the Théâtre Comte , where he was engaged for 18 months. Then, in 1826, he left Paris to work in Bordeaux. There he met his aunt, his seven years younger cousin and later wife Thelma Herdlitz , whom he married as soon as she was old enough. His aunt himself and his grandmother who lived there were former actresses at the Comédie-Française and gave him lessons during that time. Engagements in Clermont-Ferrand and 1831 Toulouse followed.

In the same year Taigny returned to Paris with his wife, where he made his debut with a leading role at the Théâtre du Vaudeville in a play by Étienne Arago , who also directed. His acting was popular and so he was able to celebrate great success in the following years. In particular, a travesty role in which he played a teenage lover made him the talk of the day and the darling of the audience. He had continuous engagements together with his wife and so the two made a tour through the province from 1838 to 1840. Then difficult times began for Taigny. He found it difficult to get new engagements, which was probably due to his small body size.

In 1850 Taigny was able to take over the run-down Théâtre des Délassements-Comiques and he acted as both director and actor. He gave up his acting career in 1860 because he could no longer give the young lover credible. When the urban redevelopment under Georges-Eugène Haussmann came to fruition in 1862 , the entire row of houses on Rue du Temple was demolished. Taigny used the forced change to take over the management of the Théâtre de la Gaîté . Taigny held this position until his sudden death from a stroke.
