Emilie Cariou

Émilie Cariou (born October 14, 1971 in Verdun ) is a French politician ; She has been a member of the constituency of Meuse II since the 2017 election to the National Assembly . She was elected to the list of the La République En Marche party; however, she left the party in May 2020. She was one of the 17 founding members of the Ecology Democracy Solidarity group .

Professional career

Cariou spent most of her life as a politician in the Ministry of Economy and Finance , named Bercy after the neighborhood in which it is based . At Bercy, she worked as an employee of the Direction des Vérifications nationales et internationales (DVNI) (in German, for example: Authority for national and international tax audits) in audits at large French industrial and banking groups. She then moved to the tax legislation department.

Cariou supported Arnaud Montebourg's application in the primaries to determine the Socialist Party candidate for the 2012 presidential election , advising him on financial policy issues.

After the 2012 election to the National Assembly , Cariou worked for Fleur Pellerin , who was then Assistant Minister for Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises, Innovation and the Digital Economy ; she advised the minister on issues relating to the taxation of internet giants . Soon after, she followed Pellerin to their Ministry of Culture and Communication ; there she was responsible for copyright issues within the EU. She retained the post of advisor when Audrey Azoulay succeeded Pellerin; she was now conseillère aux affaires européennes, à l'international et au numérique (advisor on European issues and international relations as well as digitization).

In May 2014 Cariou became Deputy Director of the Center national du cinéma et de l'image animée  (CNC) with responsibility for budget and financing.

Political career

Cariou is a member of the National Assembly's Finance Committee. In 2019 she succeeded Bénédicte Peyrol as coordinator of her group at the time for this committee.

In 2018, Cariou became the parliamentary rapporteur for reform of the prosecution of tax crimes .

In July 2019, Cariou ran to succeed Carole Bureau-Bonnard as Vice-President of the National Assembly; in an internal group vote, she was defeated by Laëtitia Saint-Paul.

In May 2020, Cariou joined seven other members of parliament. They left the LREM faction and founded the Ecology Democracy Solidarity (EDS) group, which resulted in the president losing his absolute majority in parliament and increasing pressure on him to pursue more left-wing politics.

Political positions

In late 2017, Cariou was one of those who advocated higher taxation of luxury goods (yachts, valuables, sports cars) in view of the abolition of the solidarity tax on wealth (ISF).
