Étienne Tempier († September 3, 1279 ) was Bishop of Paris .

Tempier came from Orléans and, after studying in Paris, was a master of theology and canon at Notre Dame de Paris . In 1263 he became chancellor of the cathedral chapter and thus of the University of Paris . From October 7, 1268 until his death he was Bishop of Paris. Against Philip III. the Bold he defended the secular rights of the Church of Paris and was then temporarily exiled from his diocese in 1273 . In 1274 he took part in the 2nd Council of Lyon .

His " Paris convictions " numerous natural philosophy and metaphysical theses of Averroism and Aristotelianism on December 10, 1270 and March 7, 1277 at the University of Paris mark a high point in the discussion of the Augustinian - monastic theology with these philosophical currents of the Middle Ages .
