Étienne Wolff

Étienne Wolff (born February 12, 1904 in Auxerre , † November 18, 1996 in Paris ) was a French developmental biologist. Various new research methods in experimental embryology originate from him and he was a pioneer in the use of higher vertebrate animals (chicken embryos) in experiments.

Life

Wolff, who went to school in Rouen and to the Lycée Louis-le-Grand , first studied literature and philosophy at the Sorbonne (licentiate 1921), but then switched to the natural sciences (licentiate 1925, Agrégation 1928). From 1931 he was in the Embryology Laboratory of the University of Strasbourg with Paul Ancel and began investigating experimental teratologyand embryology, although in contrast to earlier scientists he does not have eggs from invertebrates such as B. used by sea urchins or amphibians, but chicken embryos. He irradiated them with X-rays and was able to reproduce all kinds of deformities. In 1935 he investigated the role of sex hormones in differentiation. In 1936 he received his doctorate (Les bases de la tératogenèse expérimentale des Vertébrés Amniotes d'après les résultats de méthodes directe). From 1940 to 1945 he was imprisoned during the German occupation and after his return he became a professor in Strasbourg. In 1955 he became a professor at the Collège de France .

In 1963 he became a member of the Académie des sciences and in 1966 of the Académie nationale de médecine . In 1971 he was accepted into the Académie française . In 1958 he became president of the Société zoologique de France.

Nicole Le Douarin is one of his students . In 1951, together with his student Katy Haffen, developed a new method of in vitro culture of organ cells.
