Étienne de Joinville was born as the youngest son of Gottfried I. de Joinville and his wife Blanche von Reynel.

Due to the primogeniture towards his brother Gottfried, he was not included in the succession of the lords of Joinville, and his family provided him for the clergy at an early age and handed him over to the monastery of Saint-Claude . There he received his religious education under Simon von Crépy and stayed with the abbey as a conventual for ten years .

Then Étienne joined as a monk of the Abbey of Cluny , where his uncle Guy worked as Grand Prior and followed him in 1079, with his appointment as abbot of the monastery of Montierneuf, to Poitiers .

Later on, Étienne de Joinville headed the priory of Bar-sur-Aube , which was subordinate to the Abbey of Saint-Claude and was finally consecrated abbot of the Abbey of Saint-Pierre in Bèze by Robert of Burgundy, Bishop of Langres , in 1088 he was in charge until his death in 1124.

Joinville is considered the most important abbot of the Bèze monastery in the High Middle Ages ; under his leadership the abbey experienced an economic boom and the number of conventuals increased to up to 150 monks.

During Joinville's Abbatiat, Pope Paschal II visited the Abbey of Béze from February 17-19, 1107 and consecrated the high altar of the monastery complex in a service the day after his arrival .

His grave inscription read: " Abbas ecclesiam venerabiliter renovavit / Dum res ecclesiæ pro posse suo decoravit / Stephanus ecclesiæ caput extendit super amnem ".
