Óscar brewer Herrera

Oscar Brauer Herrera (born December 14, 1922 in Xalapa , Veracruz state ) is a former Mexican agronomist , university professor and politician of the Partido Revolucionario Institucional (PRI), who between 1974 and 1976 was Minister of Agriculture and Food SAF ( Secretarío de Agricultura y Fomento ) was in the government of President Luis Echeverría Álvarez .

Life

Studies, researcher and doctorate

After attending school in 1945, Brauer Herrera began studying crop science at the Universidad Autónoma Chapingo (UAch), which he graduated as an agricultural engineer in 1951. He then took up a job as a technical assistant for cotton at Anderson Clayton & Co. in Heroica Matamoros and was subsequently a researcher in the Department of Crop Production in the Special Studies Office of the Ministry of Agriculture and Food between 1952 and 1956. During this time he completed postgraduate studies from 1954 to 1955 at the University of California, Davis (UC Davis), which he obtained with a Master of Science (M.Sc.).

In 1956, Brauer Herrera became technical assistant for the use of herbicides and fumigants at the Mexican branch of the international chemical company Dow Chemical and in 1958 director of the agricultural research center of the Office for Special Studies of the Ministry of Agriculture and Food, before becoming a researcher and professor from 1959 to 1965 at the Universidad Autónoma Chapingo and at the Graduate School of the National Polytechnic Institute IPN ( Instituto Politécnico Nacional ) .

During this time he began in 1960 his doctorate as Doctor of Agricultural Sciences at the Georg-August University Göttingen , he with a 1962 thesis entitled Studies on quality properties in Fi hybrids of pepper, Capsicum annuum L. graduated.

University professor and minister

In 1965, Brauer Herrera took over the position of professor and director of the Graduate School of the Universidad Autónoma Chapingo and held this position until 1969. He then became director of the Agricultural Research Center of the Universidad Autónoma de Sinaloa in 1969 , which included research laboratories in Culiacán , El Fuerte and El Carrizo , and was then director general of the National Institute for Agricultural Research between 1970 and 1972.

He then served as Undersecretary of State in the Ministry of Agriculture and Food between 1972 and 1974, before succeeding Manuel Bernardo Aguirre, who was elected governor of the state of Chihuahua , as Minister of Agriculture and Food (Secretarío de Agricultura y Fomento) on October 4, 1974 . He held this ministerial office until the end of the term of office of President Luis Echeverría Álvarez on November 30, 1976.

In 1974 Brauer Herrera was the first Mexican to be awarded the Inter-American Agricultural Medal .
