De los Santos is a member of the Frente Amplio . In the mid-1980s, he was General Secretary of the Uruguayan Communist Party in Maldonado. However, he left this party in 1992 and founded the Asamblea Democrática , which can be assigned to the Frente Amplio, at the departamental level and which then joined the Alianza Progresista .

In 1989 he was first a member of the Junta Departamental .
