Public lavatory at the Bavariaring
The public restroom at Bavaria ring is a monument protected building in the Munich district Ludwigsvorstadt . The building was erected in 1894 on the northern edge of the Theresienwiese according to plans by the Munich architect and building officer Hans Grässel .
history
Originally the building served as a public shower bath . The City of Munich wanted to offer the residents of the working-class neighborhoods on the Theresienhöhe , whose apartments seldom had bathrooms, the opportunity to have regular personal hygiene.
Because of the proximity to the houses in the elegant Ludwigsvorstadt district , Grässel decided to use elaborate staffage, especially when designing the facade . Over an octagonal floor plan, following the historicizing taste of the time, he created a clearly structured building that was largely influenced by Palladianism . He placed a mighty portico in front of the octagonal main building . On the other hand, Grässel designed the interior to be extremely functional. He arranged the individual shower cubicles in a circle around a heating system in the middle of the building.
After the shower bath had been closed, the city administration decided to continue using the sanitary facilities and converted the building into a public lavatory . At times the building was also used as a tram conductor's house. In 2018 construction work was carried out to renovate the building and convert it into a restaurant. The restaurant Das Bad was opened in December 2018 .
On September 26, 1980 , 13 people fell victim to an explosives attack directly south of the building .
The building is on a large traffic island . Your address is Bavariaring 5.
