history

The association was founded in 1990 in the course of the upheavals in the GDR , with the aim of "promoting education and upbringing with the aim of encouraging and enabling fellow human beings to be aware of ecological, social, solidarity and grassroots democracy". Values such as mutual respect and a conscious approach to nature are conveyed in early childhood, and people's responsibility for the preservation of the natural environment and the universality of human rights are discussed in various ways.

Projects

Community accommodation for asylum seekers

The association operates the Rostock communal accommodation for asylum seekers , in which around 240 asylum seekers live. The focus of work is on advising refugees and promoting integration . The aim is to enable people to represent their interests and lead a self-determined life.

World shop

The association is committed to fair trade , to justice in trade relations between the countries of the south and the north. That is why a world shop was established in the Ökovilla in 1990 (the only world shop in the city). This is run on a voluntary basis and, in addition to the products of the south, offers information for the public about the products, their countries of origin and the consequences of unjust world trade structures for the local population.

Toddler group and children's shop

A crawling group was founded in 1994 and is now located in Südstadt . Here children between the ages of three months and three years are looked after by two teachers and one freelance worker.
The children's shop "Kellermäuse" was founded in 1990 as the first Rostock parents' initiative . It arose after the fall of the Wall out of the need to create an alternative to the large state children's institutions. In the mixed-age group, 20 children between the ages of two and a half years up to school entry are looked after by four trained educators. The parents are closely involved in the work on organizational, educational and personal issues.

Development education

There are events on topics of development policy , sustainability and integration. The aim of meeting and educational events is to arouse interest in other cultures and to point out the connection between affluent societies and migration movements . The target groups of the seminars, training courses, lectures and educational trips are primarily school classes, teachers, trainee teachers and students. The tasks are primarily carried out with four permanent employees. In addition, the educational project maintains a position within the framework of the Voluntary Ecological Year, which is awarded every year. The association is a state-recognized institution for continuing education in the field of education for sustainable development (ESD).

Intercultural garden

The intercultural garden in Rostock's Südstadt was created in 2011 and is therefore the most recent project of the Ökohaus eV Around 50 people from 20 nations and cultures work together on a piece of land measuring around 2000 square meters. Each gardening family or group can plant a plot of 20 to 40 square meters according to their own ideas. All participants plan and design the common areas and facilities, such as the community garden, the outdoor kitchen and the playground.

Ökovilla - model project of the DBU

In 1995 the association bought the town villa built in 1908 at Hermannstraße 36 in Rostock, the so-called eco villa . The house also serves as a roof for other projects and initiatives that share the goals and ideals of the association. Some rooms in the house are rented, for example to a restaurant. The seminar rooms in the villa are also rented out.
Since about 40 liters of the 120 liters of drinking water that every German citizen uses on average per day is used for flushing the toilet, it was decided to use a dry toilet system . Because the high water quality is not required for the purpose of flushing the toilet. In addition, compost can be obtained as a raw material from faeces in a hygienic way . The project was funded by the German Federal Environment Foundation as a nationwide, high- profile model project for alternatives in waste disposal and the possibility of saving drinking water in the public sector. In addition, knowledge about the management of a sustainable toilet facility could be gained. The ability to obtain official approval was also demonstrated, taking into account building law, hygienic and epidemiological aspects of a publicly usable composting toilet facility.
