Austrian Mathematics Olympiad

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Austrian Mathematics Olympiad is a competition for students in mathematics . In preparation for this, there is a non-binding exercise of the same name , in which two hours a week examples are calculated and theory is learned. The main aim of the Mathematics Olympiad is to promote logical thinking and problem solving. The first Austrian Mathematics Olympiad took place in 1970 and has been held annually since then.

history

In 1968 Austria received the first invitation to participate in the International Mathematics Olympiad, which has been taking place since 1959, from the then host country, the Soviet Union ( USSR ). The Ministry of Education sent observers to the competitions in 1968 and the following year, who found that the level of mathematics education in Austria was not sufficient for successful participation. As a result, preparatory courses were set up and interested math teachers were recruited.

In 1970 the first Austrian Mathematics Olympiad took place and Austria took part in the International Mathematics Olympiad for the first time. Gerd Baron was the scientific director until 2014 . Since 2014 this office has been taken over by Clemens Heuberger.

Competitions

Course competition

The course competition is the first competition. It lasts three hours and takes place in the preparatory course. The course competition is created and corrected by the respective course instructor. The best 5 students are allowed to go to the regional advanced competition a few weeks later. In the event that one or more students on the course either took part in the national competition finals in the previous year or became state winners in the junior regional competition, they do not count among the 5 possible participants that each course instructor is allowed to take with them to the regional competition.

Qualifying competition

The qualification competition is intended for those students who are unable to take part in a preparatory course. It is held in some cities. The rules are the same as in the course competition. The best participants from each city are also allowed to participate in the regional competition.

Regional competition for advanced learners

The regional competition for advanced learners is the first competition to be held uniformly throughout Austria. Until 2019 it was called the regional competition. It takes place in three places at the same time. The three areas are:

For the regional competition, the students receive four examples for which they have four hours. There is a seating plan; Participants from the same course are not allowed to sit too close together during the competition. The award ceremony will take place the next day. It will be announced who has qualified for the national competition.

Federal competition

The national competition takes place in Raach am Hochgebirge . It consists of two parts. Before each part there is a special preparation course for all participants in the national competition.

The first part of the national competition, formerly also called the intermediate competition, now known as the preliminary round, lasts four hours and 30 minutes. Here too, participants will receive four examples. Of the 40 participants, the best 24 qualify for the final of the national competition.

The second part takes place about two weeks later. The competition lasts two days, on which students have four hours and 30 minutes to complete three tasks. The best six participants qualify for the International Mathematical Olympiad , the next six, who are not in the final year of their school, for the Central European Mathematical Olympiad . Before 2007 there was no Central European Mathematics Olympiad, the participants with ranks 7-12 instead took part in the Austrian-Polish Mathematics Competition (ÖPMW). Since 2017, the four best participants in the national competition finals can also take part in the European Girls' Mathematical Olympiad (EGMO) of the following year.

Junior regional competitions

Junior regional competitions are also held in most federal states. Only students up to the sixth grade who have not yet taken part in such a competition are eligible. That is why it used to be called the beginners' competition. After the course competition, there is only this competition, which unites two federal states.
