Gerd Baron (born October 1940 in Austria ; † 30 May 2019 ) was an Austrian mathematician . He was a professor at the Technical University of Vienna and for decades the scientific director of the Austrian Mathematical Olympiad (ÖMO).

Work for the ÖMO

Gerd Baron headed the ÖMO until 2014. He put together all the tasks of the regional and national competitions (BW1 and BW2) himself and was chairman of the jury and scientific director. He also led the Austrian preparatory course for the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO). The scientific management was handed over to Clemens Heuberger; the competition tasks will henceforth be selected from submissions by a jury, similar to the IMO.

Outside of his activities for the ÖMO, he was a professor at the Vienna University of Technology, but sometimes also ran a mathematics tutorial. He also designed math problems for magazines such as Spectrum of Science .

In the winter semester of 2005, he ended his career as a professor at the Vienna University of Technology and retired.

Gerd Baron died in May 2019 at the age of 79.
