Andrzej Schinzel (1974)

Andrzej Schinzel (born April 5, 1937 in Sandomierz in Poland , † August 22, 2021 ) was a Polish mathematician who dealt with number theory.

Life

Andrzej Schinzel was a prize winner of the Mathematics Olympiad at the age of 14, a doctorate in maths at the University of Warsaw at the age of 23 and a full professor at the Institute of Mathematics of the Polish Academy of Sciences at the age of 37 .

Schinzel published over 200 papers and dealt with many areas of number theory (analytical number theory, algebraic number theory, Diophantine equations, geometry of numbers), but especially with arithmetic and algebraic aspects of polynomials. Schinzel is known for one conjecture, Schinzel's H-conjecture (from 1958, in a work with Waclaw Sierpinski ). It says that irreducible integer polynomials , the product of which Q has no fixed prime p as a divisor (i.e. Q / p is not an integer polynomial again), represent prime numbers for an infinite number of integer values of the variable x at the same time.

He was the editor of Acta Arithmetica for 40 years . Henryk Iwaniec is one of his doctoral students . In 1992 he received the Stefan Banach Medal . In 1970 he was invited speaker at the International Congress of Mathematicians in Nice (Reducibility of polynomials) and in 1962 he gave a lecture at the ICM in Stockholm (On the arithmetic of polynomials and some related problems) . In 1976 he was elected a member of the Leopoldina . He was a full member of the Polish Academy of Sciences . He was an honorary citizen of Sandomierz and a holder of the order Polonia Restituta (knight; officer).
