The Austrian Rescue Service (ÖRD) is an aid and rescue organization that consists exclusively of volunteers . The tasks of the association are those of a medical and rescue unit in accordance with the regional and / or federal state uniform legal provisions and the area of activity specified in the statutes.

history

Hermann Dominik made the decision to found an ambulance service in 1973/1974. Through his activity as a wholesale merchant, he later came into contact with various personalities from the health care sector. In 1975 he attended his first first aid course, which at the time consisted of 36 hours, and in 1978 he was a volunteer paramedic in Vienna.

In 1980 Hermann Dominik met an industrialist from Gmunden who owned a fully equipped rescue helicopter and was willing to use it in Austria.

In 1981 a small group of people began volunteering. A used but fully functional ambulance was bought with own funds, inventory and facilities were acquired on their own initiative and the service began. Initially, the main clients were sporting and cultural organizations that had to request an ambulance service for their events. At an ambulance in 1981 (mobile medical station) in the area of the Hieflertunnel of the A 10 in Golling there was an accident in the tunnel. The ÖRD also did not immediately enter the inner tunnel area with the ambulance due to the traffic jam; This resulted in the acquisition of a medical motorcycle . In January 1984 the ÖRD already had eight medical vehicles, one medical motorcycle and a sufficient number of volunteer and professional employees. On October 20, 1994, the ÖRD - Austrian Rescue Service was founded as a federal association and received its own legal personality, entitled to found further independent sub-groups, such as regional associations and district offices in all federal states and the national territories of the European Union. The motorcycle squadron (SanMotR) went into the sphere of activity of the newly founded ÖRD - Lungau district office. Furthermore, the ÖRD is a member of the IMRUA (International Motorcycle Response Unit Association). A congress takes place every year, to which the ÖRD was invited as a speaker.

In June 1996 an ÖRD district office in Zell am Ziller was founded in the Zillertal after intensive consultation with the ÖRD board . The cooperation agreement between the ÖRD, district office Zell am Ziller and the Red Cross, district office Schwaz, is a milestone since 2003. The ÖRD is also a member of the bidding group for the rescue service in Tyrol.

As of 2004, three new vehicles were already in operation in Tyrol. In 2005 a department for rescue and therapy dogs was established for the training and use of future ÖRD rescue and therapy dogs. In March 2008 the ÖRD district office Ennstal was founded.

Since 2010, the ÖRD has been a legally recognized rescue service in the state of Tyrol and is entitled to use the rescue service in Tyrol according to Tyrolean State Rescue Act to carry the protected title "Rescue". With effect from January 1, 2017, the chief emergency doctor Land Salzburg was appointed Medical Director and Chief Physician of the ÖRD. In 2017 the OÖ Süd local office, which is active with rescue dogs , was founded. Due to the good development of this local office, the local office was converted into an independent district office on June 19, 2018. On May 15, 2018, the ÖRD district office Feldkirch in Vorarlberg was founded, which works in the medical service. For 2019, the ÖRD Feldkirch was able to enter into a cooperation with the Vorarlberger Equestrian Association.
