Vegetative characteristics

The eastern spring chickweed grows as a perennial herbaceous plant and reaches heights of 5 to 15 centimeters. The opposite leaves are linear and the furrows between the leaf nerves are narrow, usually narrower than the nerves. In the leaf axils of the flowering stems there are mostly sterile clusters of leaves.

Generative characteristics

The flowering period extends from May to August. The inflorescence usually contains 10 to 20 (6 to 30) flowers. The flower stalk is 13 to 18 millimeters long. The hermaphroditic flowers are radial symmetry and five-fold with a double flower envelope . The five sepals and the white petals are approximately the same length with a length of 3 to 4 millimeters. There are two circles with five stamens each. The anthers are initially yellowish to purple-gray and finally dark purple.

The seeds usually have a diameter of 0.4 to 0.6, rarely up to 0.7 millimeters and blunt papillae that are shorter than wide.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 48.

Occurrence

The eastern spring chickweed grows collin to montane in Austria scattered or rarely in dry grasslands, especially on sandy soils in the Pannonian region .
