Överkalix is a place ( Tatort ) in the northern Swedish province of Norrbotten County and the historic province of Norrbotten . The main town of the municipality of the same name is located about 70 km northwest of Haparanda on European route 10 .
The name Överkalix was created in 1644 after the parish of Kalix was divided . Kalix can be traced back to an older Kalis , which is derived from the Sami river name Kalas-Etno (cold river).
Överkalix is a trading and service center. The Överkalix market is held here every year and attracts many visitors. There is a 330 meter high transmission mast in the village for broadcasting television and radio programs in the VHF range.
