Øksfjord

The Øksfjord is a 25 km Fjord in the field of community Loppa in Fylke (Province) Troms og Finnmark in Norway . It begins in the north on the Arctic Ocean . There it branches off almost immediately after the entrance of Stjernsund, the southernmost of the three entrances to the Altafjord (between the island of Stjernøya and the mainland), from this to the south.

On its eastern bank about 2 km south of the entrance to the fjord is the village of Øksfjord , the administrative center of Loppa municipality . About 750 m further south in the small bay of Vassdalen is the small ferry port in the village, where the Hurtigruten ships dock every day and from where there are ferry connections across the fjord to the west and to the villages of Bergsfjord and Sør-Tverrfjord, which can only be reached by ferry to Hasvik on the island of Sørøya .

The almost continuously 2 km wide fjord initially runs about 15 km to the south, then narrows to just 1.6 km east of the Øksfjordjøkelen glacier when it breaks through a mountain range and then turns at right angles to the east. After another 5 km, now only 1.5 km wide, it turns to the southeast, gradually tapering to 1000 m over the last 5 km. Finally, it ends in a spur, only about 300 m wide and 1.5 km long, 300 m northeast of the small settlement Øksfjordbotn, about 4 km north of the Langfjord branch of the Altafjord .

The provincial road 882 runs on the east bank of the fjord from Øksfjord south to Øksfjordbotn and from there on to the north bank of Langfjord, which it follows about 10 km to the west, before connecting with European route 6 .
