The Überlandwerk Fulda Aktiengesellschaft ( "ÜWAG") was a municipal power company in Fulda . On July 22, 2013, the company was merged with Gas- und Wasserversorgung GmbH (GWV) Fulda to form RhönEnergie Fulda .

history

Überlandwerk Fulda Aktiengesellschaft was founded in 1912 under the name “Elektricitätswerk Fulda AG” on the initiative of private donors. In 1919 the foundation stone for the power supply in the region was laid with the establishment of the special purpose association Überlandwerk Fulda-Hünfeld-Schlüchtern. The Zweckverband acquired the shares in Elektricitätswerk Fulda AG in 1921 and incorporated the city of Fulda’s power grid into its existing regional supply. Elektricitätswerk Fulda AG restricts itself to trading in electrical appliances and the installation business. The company was given its current name as early as 1939. At that time, 36,000 customers were supplied with electricity. The pipeline network had grown to 1,500 km. On August 1, 1949, the first ÜWAG bus drove in Fulda - a Krauss-Maffei KMO with 36 seats.

By the mid-1950s, electricity demand in households increased due to the first electrical appliances. In 1955, ÜWAG supplied more than 100 million kilowatt hours a year for the first time. In addition, the entire distribution network was switched to a uniform voltage of 220/380 volts.

The new company building in downtown Fulda was completed in 1963. The old building at the same location had already been moved into in 1931 and was used continuously without major structural changes. In 1975 the modern network control center in Petersberg was put into operation. All important information about the condition of the ÜWAG network comes together there. Since 1976 all substations can be remotely controlled from there. In the years to come, ÜWAG's power grid continued to grow. With the commissioning of a new control center in 2004, the company had one of the most modern systems in Europe. In 2012, the network area was expanded to include municipalities in Thuringia and Bavaria. This increased the number of people who are supplied with energy via the ÜWAG power grid to around 260,000.

Following resolutions by the Fulda District Assembly , the Fulda City Council and the ÜWAG special purpose association meeting, ÜWAG merged with Gas- und Wasserversorgung GmbH (GWV) Fulda to form RhönEnergie Fulda GmbH in June 2013 .

Customer center

The ÜWAG customer center was located in downtown Fulda (Bahnhofstrasse 2). In addition to information about energy and mobility, the ÜWAG made the customer center available to charitable and non-profit organizations and associations or for presentations of particularly interesting projects by corporate customers.

Green electricity

ÜWAG offered certified green electricity. Customers could choose between products with the TÜV SÜD seal or the GSL-Gold label. Many experts and consumer advocates consider the GSL Gold label to be the strictest seal of approval on the market. The energy supplied was generated 100 percent from renewable sources in an environmentally friendly manner. The label also confirms that one cent per kilowatt hour sold from this tariff goes directly to promoting renewable energy generation.

Power generation

For many years now, ÜWAG has been developing and implementing concepts for expanding sustainable energy generation. Wind power, solar energy, geothermal energy, landfill or biogas - there are already projects within the ÜWAG Group for all these forms of regenerative generation: The solar parks in Großenlüder and Kalbach, the "Wind Partnership East Hesse", the biogas plants in Eichenzell-Rothemann and Hauneck- Bodes, the landfill gas CHP plant in Kalbach and the numerous projects to develop environmentally friendly geothermal energy by the ÜWAG subsidiary TERRA THERM Erdwärme GmbH. Osthessen Netz GmbH also has its own power plant in Fulda.
