The Üble Gorge is a gorge in the Frutz river valley in Vorarlberg . It is a European protected area .

Location description

The Üble Gorge is located in the Laternsertal and thus in the Bregenzerwald Mountains . It is located in the municipality of Laterns in the Feldkirch district . The European reserve "Üble Schlucht" has a size of 7.59 hectares and lies at an altitude between 615 and 813  m above sea level. A. The gorge itself is 500 meters long. From the village of Laterns-Thal, a hiking trail marked as an alpine path leads into the gorge; from Rankweil it can be reached via the Netschelweg. The gorge is mostly closed in the winter months due to the risk of falling rocks. The ascent requires firm footing and good footwear.

history

Over the millennia, the course of the Frutz river has dug its way through the special geological formations of the Latern Valley, which mainly consists of silica limestone . In earlier years the Üble Gorge was an obstacle between the Laternsertal and the Rhine Valley that was difficult to overcome, when the path through the gorge was still an important route connection. Wood-Flözer also used the Frutz as a transport route to transport logs into the Rhine Valley. The Üble gorge was a bottleneck. Today only a hiking trail leads through the gorge.

The European reserve "Üble Schlucht" has a size of 7.59 hectares and lies at an altitude between 615 and 813  m above sea level. A. The gorge itself is 500 meters long. The protected area is one of the few areas in Vorarlberg in a low location that is largely untouched by humans. In the gorge there are fast flowing river sections but also pools that form a habitat for brown trout . The craggy limestone walls and the cool, humid climate provide the habitat for mosses and ferns. The Swiss man's shield grows here .

Surname
