Þórunn Egilsdóttir (German transcription Thorunn Egilsdottir , born November 23, 1964 in Reykjavík ; † July 9, 2021 in Akureyri ) was an Icelandic politician ( Progressive Party ).

Career

Þórunn has been a sheep farmer since 1986. After completing her teaching degree at the then Icelandic University of Education ( Kennaraháskóli Íslands , KHÍ) with a Bachelor of Education in 1999, she also worked as a primary school teacher until 2008, and from 2005 to 2008 in the school management. From 1998 to 2008 she was a member of the social committee of the municipality of Vopnafjörður . From 2008 to 2013 she was project manager at the knowledge network Austurland .

Since the Icelandic parliamentary election on April 27, 2013 , Þórunn was a member of the Icelandic parliament Althing for the northeastern constituency . In 2015 she was group leader of the Progress Party. Her successor in this office, Ásmundur Einar Daðason , did not run for the general election in Iceland in 2016 ; since 2016, Þórunn has again held the chairmanship of the parliamentary group.

Þórunn Egilsdóttir was a member of the Parliament's Committee on Economic Affairs and chair of the Icelandic delegation to the NATO Parliamentary Assembly from 2013 to 2016 . From 2013 to 2015 she was also a member of the Committee on Welfare. From 2016 to 2017 she was Chair of the Judicial Affairs and Education Committee. Since 2017 she has been a member of the Constitutional and Oversight Committee and was Deputy Chair of the Icelandic delegation to the West Nordic Council .

She died of breast cancer in Akureyri hospital on July 9, 2021 . She had already ended her work in parliament in January 2021 due to her cancer, which she openly discussed, and announced that she would no longer run for the parliamentary elections in Iceland in 2021 . Her seat took Þórarinn Ingi Pétursson , who had previously represented her as a substitute ( varaþingmaður ) in parliament.
