The StEG 40 was a tank locomotive series of the Austro-Hungarian State Railway Company (StEG).

The StEG procured 16 copies as series  40 1908/09 from its own locomotive factory for shunting . The machines had internal frames and external controls, but the dimensions of the cylinders and the boiler make them seem out of date.

With the nationalization of the StEG lines on Austrian territory in 1909, all 40 series machines came to the kk Staatseisenbahnen Österreichs (kkStB) as series  179 .

After the First World War , all of the locomotives were awarded to ČSD , which they classified as  class 421.0 and retired by 1952. From 1939 to 1945 there were six of them on the Hungarian state railway MÁV, which ran them as the 477 series  .

Finally, it should be noted that the StEG 40 series was already occupied by two machines, the 4001 and the 4002 . The two locomotives were soon retired.
