The Class 1'D Liberation was a freight locomotive that was designed and built by the North British Locomotive Company and Vulcan Foundry during World War II for use as an Allied war locomotive in Western Europe. At the end of the Second World War, the locomotives no longer needed were offered to the liberated states of Europe as reconstruction aid. A total of 110 machines were given to the JDŽ , the PKP and the ČSD . The UNRRA took over the financing, which is why the locomotives are also known as UNRRA locomotives . In addition, the CFL had 10 machines built.

ČSD series 459.0 (Czechoslovakia)

The Czechoslovak State Railways (ČSD) took over 15 machines in 1946, which they classified as class 459.0.

The 459.0 series had the largest boilers at the ČSD after the 636.0 series . It had an inner diameter of 1,905 mm. During the delivery, many parts and designs did not meet the standards of steam locomotive construction at ČSD. That concerned z. B. the left-hand drive, the water glasses and the filling of the tender water. This was changed accordingly during the first general inspection in the repair shop.

The locomotives were very powerful machines. They exceeded the 534.03 , which has one more driving axle. They were able to pull 1,800 t at 60 km / h on the level (the 534.03 1400 t), on a slope of 10 ‰ 350 t at 60 km / h (the 534.03 250 t). At the beginning of her assignment there were speed restrictions due to her high number of duties (e.g. she was only allowed to drive 50 km / h on the Česká Třebová – Praha route , and only 30 km / h on the bridges). All 15 machines were assigned to the Česká Třebová depot in 1946 , where they took over the scheduled freight train service. Later, after the electrification of the Česká Třebová - Praha line, they were put into the pushing service and then to Kolin and Kutna Hora , where they carried heavy freight trains.

The 459.0 series machines were very popular with staff. Many of their design features were used in the construction of the later new locomotives 475.1 , 477.0 , 498.0 and 556.0 (shaking grate HOULSON, injectors , sheet metal frames, headlights with reflectors).

Since they were not approved on many routes due to their high axle load, they were quickly retired as a splinter class after the appearance of the diesel traction. The first locomotives were parked in 1969, the last four in 1971. No copy has been preserved in the museum.

CFL series 47 (Luxembourg)

In 1945 the CFL ordered 10 machines from Vulcan Foundry. In contrast to the other vehicles, the steam locomotives were built with right-hand drive. The machines were delivered in late 1946 for around £ 15,000 each.

In 1960/61 the machines were retired.
