The CSD series 556.0 was designed for freight service Tender - steam locomotive of the former Czechoslovak State Railways (CSD). Due to the built-in stoker fire, they were nicknamed Štokr by the operations service .

It was designed because the existing locomotive fleet was either too slow ( ČSD series 534.03 ) or not suitable for other reasons ( ČSD series 555.0 ) for the expected transport tasks . The positive experience with the 1'E chassis of the German locomotives 50 and 52 led to the creation of a locomotive at Škoda , Plzeň, under the direction of Ing.Kalčik, which represents the pinnacle of steam locomotive construction in Czechoslovakia and is a top-class construction on a European scale.

Shortly after its appearance, the new locomotive was used in existing freight train plans to test its performance. In 1952, for example, a train with a load of 1400 t was carried on an incline of 10 ‰ at a speed of 23 km / h. The norm here was 1000 t. From 1954 to 1958 some spectacular trains were run:

  • a train with a load of 3002 t without a sliding locomotive
  • a train with a load of 7392 t (432 axles and 1500 m length) with a push locomotive
  • The absolute record was the transport of a train from Kojetín to Ostrava on December 20, 1958. A train with 484 axles, 121 wagons and a load of 8272 t (1800 m long) was carried by the 556.0338 and 556.0020 as pushing locomotives. At times, the 556.0155 served as a second sliding locomotive. These records meant that 4000 t brown coal block trains were soon being carried by the 556.0.

Nevertheless, thanks to its low axle pressure, the locomotive was universally applicable and could be found all over the country during its 30 years of service. The locomotive also caused a stir internationally. 1957 stayed the 556.0265 to measurements at the VES-M Halle , another locomotive was in Romania tested. In 1971 17 locomotives helped out in Hungary. The locomotives came regularly to the GDR and Austria until the end of the 1970s, even before the Vindobona , operations between Gmünd / Lower Austria and Česke Velenicé could be observed.

With the electrification of the most important main lines and the procurement of diesel locomotives, the locomotives gradually became dispensable from the 1970s. In 1980 the steam locomotive operation at the ČSD was ended with them.

Some of the locomotives have been preserved. However, only 556.0506 in Budweis and 556.036 in Bratislava are still operational . The locomotives 556.0298 in Prague , 556.0510 in Chomutov , 556.039 in Plešivec , 556.0254 and 0271 in the Railway Museum Lužná u Rakovníka and 556.0458 in Liptovský Mikuláš are not operational.

technical features

When building the class 556.0 locomotive, all knowledge was applied that had previously been gathered in steam locomotive construction worldwide. In the construction, roller bearings , stoker firing, automatic lubrication, double blow pipes of the Kylchap type , pneumatic deslagging of the boiler and pneumatic actuation of the Heusinger control with a servo motor were planned. The boiler pressure has been increased to 18 bar, otherwise the boiler is identical to that of the 475.1 . The locomotive is made entirely of welded construction.
