The railcar of M 230.0 series was a four-axle twin- benzene mechanical railcars for mixed traffic of the former Czechoslovak State Railways (CSD). It was the first twin-engine railcar with mechanical power transmission of the ČSD.

History and commitment

In 1926, when the M 220.1 was delivered to ČSD at Severočeská Vagónka Česká Lípa , this vehicle was created as the first test vehicle with a twin-engine drive.

The railcar was put into service on August 17, 1926 on routes around Ostrava . In 1927 he was on the express train service on the Karlovy Vary - Marienbad route and in the autumn of the same year express train service on the Pilsen - Žatec - Duchcov route . He remained a prototype. There were difficulties in operation because the pneumatic control of the gearbox did not fully manage the synchronization of the twin-motor system. In many cases the car was parked as a reserve and was converted into a school car in 1941.

technical features

The vehicles were driven by two six-cylinder four-stroke petrol engines from NAG. The torque of each engine was transmitted to a four-stage mechanical gearbox of the NAG type via a cardan shaft. This was controlled by compressed air. The gearbox was equipped with a reversing gearbox and hung in the frame of the car above the bogie. With it, the torque was transferred to the second axle of the vehicle, so that the axle sequence (1A) (A1) resulted.

The entire propulsion system was at the top of the car. A radiator protruded over the top of the vehicle and gave the vehicle its characteristic appearance, as did the duct that led the cooling air down from the roof.

The car had bogies with double suspension. It had an automatic Knorr traction brake . The passenger compartment was divided into three areas with 74 seats. This was heated by the exhaust gases from the internal combustion engine. There was a driver's cab at both ends of the car. Since both combustion engines were arranged in the middle of the axle under a cover, the driver's desk was on the right. The forehead area was both the entry area for passengers and the luggage compartment. There was a small passage to the left of the engine cover and a front door with a transition bridge. This arrangement was in principle adopted with minor changes from the following M 220.2 , M 220.3 , M 221.2 , M 251.0 and M 251.1 .
