The Čakorpass ( Albanian Qafa e Çakorrit ) is a mountain crossing near the Rugova Gorge between the Albanian Alps ( Prokletije ) and the Mokra Mountains in eastern Montenegro . It has a peak height of 1849 m. i. J. and is located on the road connecting the Montenegrin city of Andrijevica and Peja in western Kosovo .
Location and landscape
The area around the pass consists of the limestone of the Montenegrin Karst and forms steep slopes here. The state border does not run on the ridge, but down the valley at the beginning of the Rugova Gorge .
traffic
The pass or the border to Kosovo below is currently closed after the road was blocked in the course of the Kosovo war in 1999. The reopening was planned for 2011, but as of September 2013 the pass road was only paved on the Montenegrin side, the transition to Kosovo is blocked by a tank barrier, on the Kosovar side only a dirt road that is temporarily impassable leads to this barrier.
The Peaks of the Balkans long-distance hiking trail leads through Kosovar territory not far from the top of the pass on the east side.
Expansion plans
The construction of a four-kilometer-long motorway tunnel as part of the Andrijevica – Čakor motorway under the Čakor Pass is planned. This tunnel would shorten the connection between Andrijevica and Peja considerably.
