Rugova gorge
The Rugova Gorge ( Albanian Gryka / -ë e Rugovës ; Serbian Руговска клисура Rugovska klisura ) is an approximately 25 km long gorge in western Kosovo . It is located west of the city of Peja (Serbian Peć ) in the Albanian Alps near the Montenegrin border . The gorge is formed by the upper reaches of the Pećka Bistrica , a tributary of the White Drin .
Location and accessibility
Villages in the Rugova Valley are Drelaj , Shtupeq i Vogël and Kuqishta .
The M-9 road runs through the gorge and continues to the Čakor Pass and Montenegro . As a result of the war in Kosovo, the border has been closed since 1999 and the road at the border is blocked. The reopening of the road connection was planned for 2011, but has not yet been implemented.
tourism
The Rugova Gorge is one of the most famous tourism attractions in Kosovo. As of August 2013, the Montenegrin side is paved, but the crossing is impassable. At the exit of the gorge, about three kilometers west of the center of Peja, is the Patriarchal Monastery of Peć, a UNESCO World Heritage Site .
The tourist offer includes the first via ferrata in the Balkans, which opened in 2013, and hiking trails such as the Peaks of the Balkans long-distance hiking trail .
