Člověk v tísni (English People in Need , German Mensch in Not ) is a non-governmental organization in Prague that is nationally and internationally committed to humanitarian and development aid and the defense of human rights. It is the largest aid organization in the country.

Worldwide activities: orange - humanitarian aid, blue - political support, red - social projects (1992–2015)

The organization supports aid projects in crisis countries such as Syria , Eastern Ukraine , various countries in Africa and Asia (26 countries in total in 2016) and carries out development projects that aim to improve the living conditions of the population in the long term. Člověk v tísni supports democratic and opposition organizations in Cuba , Belarus , Russia , Ukraine , Moldova , Azerbaijan and other countries.

In the Czech Republic and Slovakia she carries out projects to improve the situation of socially disadvantaged groups. She campaigns for the rights of the Roma in Slovakia .

The documentary film festival for human rights Jeden svět (“One World”) is held annually in Prague ; the largest of its kind in Europe and awards the Homo-Homini Prize for Human Rights.

The organization was established in 1992 as the Lidové noviny Foundation ( Nadace lidových novin ). In 1999 it changed its name to Člověk v tísni . The chairman has been Šimon Pánek since 2009.

Člověk v tísni has been involved in around 50 countries around the world. The NGO helped after the tsunami in the Indian Ocean in 2002, famine in Africa, the civil war in Syria , the war in Ukraine since 2014 and several flood disasters in the Czech Republic.

The Russian Ministry of Justice put the NGO on a list of undesirable organizations in November 2019. The Czech Foreign Minister Tomáš Petříček criticized the move and said that it says a lot about the state of the human rights situation in Russia.

Structures

The organization has offices in several cities in the Czech Republic and Slovakia. It is financially supported by the EU , the Czech government, UN organizations and international foundations and organizations.
