The Oreti River is a river on the South Island of New Zealand and is 170 km long. Its lower course around Invercargill to its mouth south of the city is also called the New River , sometimes this name is used for the entire river.
The Oreti rises near the Mavora Lakes between Lake Te Anau and Lake Wakatipu and flows south through the Southland Plains until it joins the Foveaux Strait at the southeast end of Oreti Beach . It flows through the towns of Lumsden , Winton and Invercargill .
Together with the Mataura River and the Aparima River , the Oreti River forms the Murihiku Plains and drains an area of around 730 km².
