The Şəmkirçay is a right tributary of the Kura in Azerbaijan .

The Şəmkirçay rises in the Şahdağ mountain range in the northeast of the Lesser Caucasus . It initially flows in a predominantly northeast direction through the administrative districts of Gədəbəy and Şəmkir . At the town of Şəmkir , the river leaves the hill country and continues its course north through the Gandja-Gazakh plain . Finally it flows into the Şəmkir reservoir through which the Kura flows . Some of the river water is diverted for irrigation purposes .

The Şəmkirçay has a length of 95 km. It drains an area of ​​1170 km². The mean discharge is 49 km above the mouth of 8.58 m³ / s.

The river is named for the city of Şəmkir and the administrative district of Şəmkir through which it flows in the middle and lower reaches.
