Ștefan Petică (born October 5, 1877 in Buceşti , Tecuci district , † October 17, 1904 in Bucharest ) was a Romanian poet .

Petică was the first of the "Symbolists", as George Călinescu called a group of poets . At the age of 18 he joined the socialist circle, as he was shaped by the "revolutionary idea". After graduating from high school, he attended the philosophical faculty of the University of Bucharest , while also working as a political journalist. Few facts are known of his life; so he was a sub-lieutenant in the reserve and lived for a while in Bucharest. At the age of 27, Petică died of tuberculosis .

As a schoolboy he began to write poetry; some he was able to sell abroad and thus earn a living; he was considered a connoisseur of French literature. In addition to a work on Mallarmé , he also dealt with sociological and socialist topics. He brought symbolism and poetic theater to Romanian literature.

His date of birth is also given as January 22, 1878 ; this differing date is explained by the calendar reform.
