The TL 659.001 and TL 659.002 were test locomotives from the Czechoslovak manufacturer Škoda with gas turbine drive .

history

The idea of the gas turbine locomotive came from Switzerland , where as early as 1938, the SBB Am 4/6 built the first vehicle for test purposes. In contrast to diesel locomotives , gas turbine locomotives also made it possible to burn cheap heavy oil , which at the time was a waste product in oil refineries. The comparatively low power-to-weight ratio of the gas turbine also promised the construction of very powerful locomotives that would be superior to oil-fired steam locomotives in terms of performance and economy.

Škoda in Plzeň began developing such a locomotive in the 1950s , which, in contrast to the Swiss model, received mechanical power transmission. In February 1958, Škoda completed the first prototype TL 659.001 with the serial number 3914. In the same year, the locomotive was presented at the world exhibition Expo 58 in Brussels. The first trips took place in March 1959 on the Plzeň – Cheb – Sokolov route . On March 15, 1959, the locomotive carried a freight train with an enormous load of 6,486 tons. Two days later, during a test drive on the Prague – Plzeň line near the Šťáhlavy stop, a fire broke out in the engine room, which partially destroyed the locomotive. As a repair was not worth it, it was then scrapped.

The second TL 659.002 locomotive left the factory on March 18, 1960. After the technical acceptance on March 28, 1960, the test program began. The construction turned out to be immature. For example, the fuel tank was dimensioned too small in relation to the fuel consumption (up to 1000 liters per operating hour). The locomotive therefore always carried an additional tank car with fuel on the test runs . Another problem was the strong noise emission, which would have had to be dampened in a series production.

After completion of the test program, the locomotive was used in regular freight traffic by the Czechoslovak State Railways (ČSD) in Kolín and Plzeň from 1962 . After it was taken out of service on April 29, 1966, Škoda gave it to the Transport College in Žilina (Vysoká škola dopravná v Žiline) as a display object , where it was dismantled shortly afterwards.

Constructive features

Both light heating oil and heavy oil ( masut ) could be used as fuel for the locomotive . The traction turbine delivered its power to all six axles via a mechanical transmission. A second smaller turbine drove the compressor for the combustion air. As auxiliary motor to start the compressor turbine was a diesel engine of the type Tatra 111 used A, which could be used as a maneuvering drive.
