1-naphthol (also α-naphthol ) is an organic chemical compound. The structure consists of a naphthalene structure with an attached hydroxyl group (-OH). It can therefore also be called 1-hydroxynaphthalene. There is another isomer , 2-naphthol (β-naphthol, 2-hydroxynaphthalene).
use
Under the action of a strong acid, such as. B. concentrated sulfuric acid, furfural or 5-hydroxymethylfurfural are formed from pentoses and hexoses by intramolecular dehydration . This condenses with 1-naphthol to form a violet dye ( Molisch sample ).
