action

It shows the fate of a house community in Edisonstrasse at the time of the approaching end of the war in destroyed Berlin. The sensitive author Dr. Herbert Pieritz moves into the Bachmanns' apartment and, as a radio play writer for Großdeutscher Rundfunk, is supposed to write a play entitled “Germany laughs”. However, with the constant shell hits, he can't think of anything fun. When a depot is released for looting, the residents try to provide for themselves. Resolute Tatjana Zeitler finds a few bars of chocolate there and shares slate with her neighbor Erich. Nobody knows at first that Erich is hiding the Jewish girl Ruthi Tannenbaum in the attic, who previously lived with the Bachmanns who were killed in a grenade. The young woman lives in a diary-like fantasy world and to endure the loneliness she writes letters to her family. Ruthi knows that by the end of 1941 they were all deported to certain death, but the illusion persists. A bomb hit makes Erich's apartment uninhabitable and Herbert takes the girl in with him. In doing so, he is taking a high risk, as block warden Gulisch is constantly sniffing around. Herbert manages to take the ID of a dead nurse who looks like Ruthi. She is protected by the new identity and disguise in sisters' clothes. The Red Army is advancing on this street too. Ruthi wants to see her family again and wants to cycle to see them in Estonia . She hopes to overcome the difficult path with the strength of her longing. The Red Army hangs up pictures of Stalin and the residents collectively begin cleaning up their streets.
