The asteroid (133243) Essen was discovered on September 2, 2003 at the Walter Hohmann observatory in Essen and reported to the Minor Planet Center the following night after further observation . It was then given the provisional designation 2003 RT1 . After numerous other observations were carried out by numerous observatories in the following years, the orbit could finally be calculated with great accuracy. After that, the discoverer was given the right to suggest a name.

In the summer of 2009, the name proposal was submitted, which was accepted unchanged; the official name is now (133243) Essen . The reason for the suggested name:

Essen, in the German agglomeration "Ruhrgebiet", is the former center of German heavy industry. It has emerged as a modern city with various scientific and cultural activities. Essen is the location of the observatory where this minor planet was discovered. (Essen, located in the German metropolitan area "Ruhrgebiet", is the former center of German heavy industry.
