(9000) Hal ( provisional designation: 1981 JO ) is an asteroid of the main belt , which on May 3, 1981 by the American astronomer Edward LG Bowell at Lowell Observatory in Arizona was discovered.

The asteroid is named after the HAL 9000 computer from the 2001 science fiction film : A Space Odyssey .
