Water names on -born

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

-born is a body of water name broadcast used in some German-speaking regions. It is particularly widespread in Middle and Low German . As an appellative it is also used for valleys and settlements - sometimes in a causal context. -ichen and - lin are diminutive .

etymology

As an appellative , -born is modern. The first documented form of naming a river with -born dates from the year 1469. The meaning of the name is identical to -brunnen and is derived from the Old High German prunno or the Middle High German borne and means “source or spring water”.

As a basic word, born is not very common in bodies of water, much less the connection with -bach , derived from the ancient Germanic bourn (brook). The word formations with -born as the basic word are entirely modern. The name is used for small streams, especially for insignificant mountain springs. The diminutive form -ichen goes back to the Low German suffix -ichīn . This form has been demonstrable since 11/12. Century. The diminutive -lin goes back to -ilîn , Middle High German -līn .

Where a settlement has a name identical to a body of water, it is almost without exception that the name of the body of water was subsequently transferred to the settlement. From the beginning, natural places such as mountains, streams or forests have been there and given names. Human settlement generally took place later. In many cases it replaced a period of nomadism . Sedentariness only occurs in an even later cultural epoch and only then did it become necessary to give names to human settlements. A place name with -born refers to a natural spring, for example the Pader headwaters are in downtown Paderborn .
